So here's a compromise:

1) Kosovo renounces independence and returns to Serbian control.
2) Kosovo gets to choose up to half of Serbia's military hardware, and transfer that hardware to Kosovar control, out of the Serbian chain of command. Additionally, Kosovo gets half of all future defense allocations, on a one-to-one basis (that is, for every tank Serbia buys, Kosovo gets one too).

This will simultaneously solve the problem that Serbia does not want to let Kosovo go, and Kosovo does not want to be under the control of the Serbian government anymore. Serbs will still be able to come and go freely in the Kosovo area, and the Kosovars will be able to kick the Serbs's ass should they try to assert their authority.

Without them agreeing to adopt such a drastic, and mutually unfavorable compromise, I don't see a good way to superglue this genie back in the lamp. Wherever we go from here, things are going to be very unpleasant.

One is tempted to make a comparison with Israel here, but I can't decide which side is the Israelis.
