So, one of the big challenges for emerging countries, such as those of Sub-Saharan Africa, is what is known as "Sustainable Development". At the most basic, this includes techniques for environmentally friendly economics, using the natural resources of a country in such a way that their use can be sustained over many generations. For nations like the United States this is seen as a good thing, as we are aware of the impact we have on the environment. In places like Africa, it is absolutely essential, because third-world economies tend to depend excessively on their own natural resources. Any interruption of those resources could cause a catastrophic disruption to their economy, and one that they are ill-prepared to handle. Countries that depend on natural resources need to be able to manage them so they do not deplete or destroy their own wealth.
One country that needs special help with this is Zimbabwe. After several years of misguided rule by President Mugabe, the country is best known for the crushing of the disorganized resistance, the ousting of her white farmers, the destruction of the slums and other poor dwellings around her cities, 2,200 percent inflation, and the increasing paranoia with which Mugabe blames everyone else in the world for his own misdeeds. Clearly, with his economy spiraling out of control, and his land management collapsing around his ears, Mugabe needs some high quality help to bring his country back in line. Perhaps with it, Zimbabwe can halt the steady decline of their agricultural sector, and restore some measure of prosperity to the country. Experienced advice from organizations like the UN could be the key to reviving their faltering economy.
Which is why it is very fortunate for Zimbabwe that they are expected to assume the chair of the UN Committee on Sustainable Development.
Oh wait...
WTF people? WTF?
