I've been busy, although what with I don't quite remember anymore.

Sometimes it bothers me that I'm a fourth year graduate student and, for the first time, I now know how to do an analysis. There should be a class where they teach you this interesting, and practical, stuff. But there isn't, so I guess we just pick it up on our own.

It's a relief to me to hear others say this. We can't all have been abducted by aliens and our memories altered.

But there isn't, so I guess we just pick it up on our own.

There are some things that I only gained a full appreciation for through working with them *after* graduation. In some cases, several years after. I don't think the learning process ever stops.

There are times though when this entire paradigm of "Publish your paper now, we'll tell you how you were actually supposed to do things later" that just grates on me.

So it's not just a case of analysis techniques being in a state of flux? That's incredibly annoying. For what it's worth, I once reanalysed and rewrote a paper five times for four different sets of reviewers. First time: conventional analysis. Second time: different conventional set of analysis for a different reviewer. Third time: New method of analysis, which is becoming the standard. Fourth time: Revisions to please a new reviewer. Fifth time? More revisions and total structural reorganization to please a yet another reviewer. This is what happens when there's a staff shuffle and your review committee changes. You're not alone in your suffering.
