I was reading about the attacks on African Union peacekeepers in the Darfur today.  According to the BBC, the attacks are suspected to be from factions of the Sudanese Liberation Army who dislike the just-signed peace agreement.  What really got me was not the attacks, the big attack on the AU base was comprised of 50 or 60 attackers with small arms and RPGs, but rather this line from the BBC report:

"
A helicopter gunship from the Sudanese military had to be called to drive the attackers away."

So, let me get this straight.  The African Union Mission In Sudan , which is in the Darfur to protect the civilians of the Darfur from both the rebels and the Janjaweed (who are backed by the Sudanese government in one way or another, regardless of what the government spokespeople have to say), are not only completely unable to apprehend 50 or 60 men firing RPGs into their campsite, they have to call for air support from the Sudanese (who are a belligerent power in this mess) just to drive them away.  And these guys are supposed to protect the citizens of Darfur how?

Man, no matter how I look at it, this situation is all kinds of fucked up.

I'd comment, but you already know I'd just end up gibbering in outrage. So just use your imagination.
