Star Wars problems
May. 10th, 2006 10:39 pmI've been in a Star Wars-y type mood recently, and I don't know why. It happens every once in a while, probably because I like the way the EU used to be put together. Since I had three or so hours free on Sunday, I read books 2-4 of the New Jedi Order at the local bookstore. I don't recommend that. I understand why Stackpole seems much more off-kilter than he usually does when writing that.
I also looked at some of the ROTS background material. It appears that Lucas finally patched what I refer to as the Star Wars Scaling Problem, namely that the Star Wars galaxy is really big, but he never acts like it is. This usually happens any time he talks about numbers, or tries to tie his own background into things. Unfortunately, his patch is too little too late and has its own consequences.
He spent the entire prequel trilogy carefully sinking half of the Extended Universe. I find it interesting that the plug he comes up with to seal up that leak has the unexpected side effect of accidentally sinking the NJO by making the Vong invasion look small, trivial and silly.
The man cannot win. I haven't figured out why not.
(This is what happens when people obsess over continuity in background)
