The supporters have...interesting...views. Mostly it seems to come from some sort of idea of "At least he's doing something". That may be an understandable moral position, but it doesn't mean that you're doing more good then harm. That's the complaint I hear from a lot of aid workers, more or less continually, it's better to make sure that what you're doing is the right thing then just to run straight in and get into trouble. "Doing something" isn't the right thing to do if you suck money away from more cost-effective operations to something that doesn't help at all, let alone to something where you're helping to fund terrorist bands in the Great Lakes region.
