I think it's more of an issue for foreigners who learn English well enough to communicate for business deals or other purposes, but don't converse that much in it. Certainly irony and sarcasm sometimes create some problems among people who know what the words mean, but don't always catch the references.

I'm sure that my barely functional knowledge of Spanish can catch neither innuendo nor sarcasm.
