I'm beginning to wonder if five years isn't preferable for an undergraduate education.
I think that opera major may not entirely fit into the problem I usually have with the humanities majors, in that most people who want to major in opera know exactly what they're doing, have done something previous in that field, and know exactly what they're getting into. It's not quite like being an English major, where you can enter college while wanting to be an English major, while not having a clue what an English major actually does (not that I do now either).
I just really dislike that a lot of the "integrated" science curriculum feels like it was welded on at the last moment with a soldering iron.
However, I feel that our music department should stop offering Music Appreciation classes that could count as general ed requirements. I haven't met anybody yet who actually learned anything in there. That's probably part of the beef many students have with the music department, they take a "Music appreciation" class, think "You can get a major in this?" and never take it seriously again. It's a bias that we have to counter, and it's especially prevalent on my side of the university.
In short, I understand your points and appreciate them. I'm probably trying to communicate something more profound, but it's late and I'm tired.
