You would think that way, but there are still some. There are people whose parents have pushed them into being a doctor or an engineer, and who totally freak at college. There are people who have suffered all their life from incompetent history teachers, and find that they really like history. Or math. Or whatever. There are also people who want to be historians, who find out what historians really do, have a collective heart attack and flee the country.
Many American students don't have a real idea of what the jobs they've been pushing for entail. A lot of British students are probably in the same boat. I'm not sure whose story ends up better.
