I think there's a rant building in me about how bloody hard it is to find anything around here. I'm beginning to become frustrated.

Well, what are you trying to find?

Anything interesting.

The problem is that the sprawl here is so immense (and I say that as someone raised in Southern California) that all useful and/or interesting stores (such as used bookstores) are spread out in no discernible pattern in sort of a random distribution over the suburbs. As a result, nobody knows anything about anything three or four towns over, so questions like "Is there a used bookstore around here" are met with universal negatives "Nope, not anywhere out here", when the answer should be "Yes, but you may or may not be able to find it".

Also, the extremely bad traffic engineering makes it very difficult to find your way to some places that you know are actually there.

Hm. This cake (http://community.livejournal.com/picturing_food/5517724.html) is probably an apt description of your situation.

Oh? I'm curious to hear an example of bad traffic engineering, as someone unfamiliar to USA traffic.

Game stores that carry board games like carcassonne probably fall in that category. It won't help if I tell you that navigating Tokyo for exact locations would be way more frustrating. How about googling before you go out, as a safety precaution? If not, how about asking friends for info, or going to internet forums to ask people with similar interests to yours?

You have more bookstores nearby than what I do. As for used, the only one anywhere near me is filled with Mills & Boon.
