I think we all expected him to die in office because he was so good at not upsetting the local power system. After all, he's been in power through Zimbabwe's massive economic downturn and seemed only to be gaining more control so clearly he knows how to keep people in power happy. This latest set of missteps though - I expect people will argue for years whether the underlying cause was greed or old age.
