There's still a base level of knowledge you have to have to get a BA. I'm in favor of actually pushing the requirements, because these days if you want an academic position of any kind you have to go onto a graduate degreee. Those who don't want such a thing often use their skills in a field they were not trained for (Liberal Arts major going into business), and thus need a broad background.
